North Sea Sunset II

Mr. Deity

"....like science and medicine and philosophy and logic and reason and democracy and engineering and astronomy-"

"Oh, astronomy! I love astronomy! Did you see Larry's horoscope today? He is so screwed today! I don't know why I even had him go looking for the keys..."

"Astronomy, not astrology."

"What's the difference?"

"About 50 IQ points".

Sunrise on the North Sea

Lack of Water

To whom it may concern,

In late November I took a Norwegian flight from Stavanger Sola to Alicante, Spain. Shortly after takeoff, I was shocked to learn that you must pay for water.

I am a frequent traveler, flying at least once a month for business and at least twice a year for pleasure, but this was my first time flying with Norwegian. Never in my life have I flown with any airline that did not provide free water to passengers. The two people next to me were from Spain and had left their remaining Kroners in the Red Cross donation box in the airport. Because of this, they had no cash to buy water for the entire flight! The three of us were told that we could take water from the sink in the bathroom. This is insulting and ridiculous.

I have never been so disappointed over such an easy to fix customer service issue while flying with any other airline. I look forward to your response. This response will determine whether or not I fly with your company again.

Regards,

Victor Rodriguez

Is Pascal's Wager Really the Best you've Got?

Why is Pascal's wager such a failure?

* The assumption that if a god really exists, he or she set up an afterlife with a heaven and hell

* The assumption that if a god really exists, he or she cares about belief in him/her above all else

* The assumption that if you believe in a god, it will definitely be the same god that actually exists.

* The assumption that you lose nothing if it's false. Religious belief costs people plenty - money donated to churches, time spent praying, marriages ending because of religious differences, lives lost because of relying on prayers or refused medical care, wars... need I go on?

* The assumption that people can believe in something simply because it benefits them. Would you believe goblins exist for twenty bucks? Why not?

* The assumption that any god won't see through the "believing just to get into heaven" ploy.

Psychotics and Religion

Andrea Yates, Houston Texas, 2001. Drowned her 5 children. The reason she gave was that her children weren't righteous and were doomed to Hell.

Dena Schlosser, Plano Texas, 2004. Amputated her baby's arms with a knife and offered her to God, as she believed God had commanded her to do.

Blaine Milam & Jessica Carson, Rusk County Texas, 2008. Told police Carson's 13 month old daughter was possessed and they tried to exorcise the demons out of her by beating her with a hammer and biting her.

Jan David Clark, Odessa Texas, 2008. Said he was holding his 59 year-old wife face-down on the floor during an exorcism when the devil entered his body and caused her to die.

Otty Sanchez, San Antonio Texas, 2009. Said the devil made her kill and mutilate her 3 ½ week old son. She reportedly decapitated the baby, ate part of his brain, and chewed 3 of his toes off.

Leilani Neumann, March 2008. Her daughter was sick. She and her family prayed and prayed for the girl to get better, but she didn't. They thought their God was testing their faith. They didn't want to show their lack of faith by going to a doctor. So the child died of untreated diabetes.

Marie Moore, April 5, 2009. She and her son, Mitchell, were shooting targets at a gun range when without any warning she shot her son in the head and then turned the gun on herself. She said in tapes and notes left before the murder/suicide that God made her the Antichrist, and that she must die to save her boyfriend, son and the world from violence, and her mother, father and brother from hell. Among the things she said was "Hopefully when I die, there will 1,000 years of peace."

Christopher Piersee, February 2009, LaGrange, Missouri. He murdered his 21 year old wife and 5 month old son then painted crosses on them with their own blood. Later, he told deputies he was the archangel Michael and he had killed Lucifer (his wife) and the Antichrist (his son) with a knife because bullets wouldn't work. He also painted "Michael" and "Lucifer" on the wall with blood.

I received a message:

"By the way,  I read a bit of your book on-line victor.  It has some good points.  However, I found it very ironic that you can never make money from it because by printing it you would become a hypocrit."

My response:

Hey, I'm happy you took a look at the book. As of yesterday, I changed the download link to GoogleDocs because I felt the download site I was using was too full of banners and ads.

I never really expected to make money from it; I just felt good publishing a list I had been informally compiling for a while.

That being said, there is a tip jar that downloaders can contribute to if they wish, no printing required. It worked reasonably well for Steven King with The Plant, and (possibly) for Roger Williams with The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. I haven't made a penny from this book, but it's been downloaded over 250 times and I like seeing that number.

Still, I feel that if someone decided to print the book and implement a few of its suggestions, the net environmental benefit would be positive.

Plans

Offshore (Balder FPS): Dec 3 - Dec 16

Spain: ?? a few days after getting back from offshore - a few days
after New Years

I had a ticket to Canada for Dec 19, 2009 which I'm trying to change
to Dec 2010. They are telling me tickets are only valid for 365 days,
so I may just let it expire.
